Gainesville is not a city or a town, but a census-designated place (CDP) which is a concentration of population defined by the US Census Bureau for statistical purposes only.

 

Located in Prince William County, the population was 11,481 in the 2010 census.  Gainesville is currently the third-largest CDP in the county and has 10,300 housing units.gainesville-vre-map

 

According to the US Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.3 square miles, of which, 9.7 square miles of it is land and 0.6 square miles of it is water.

There are five Prince William County Schools in Gainesville:  Buckland Mills Elementary, George G Tyler Elementary, Glenkirk Elementary, Bull Run Middle, and Gainesville Middle.

Gainesville is the home to four golf courses, Heritage Hunt, Robert Trent Jones, Stonewall Golf Club, and Virginia Oaks.

Since 2000, major commercial and residential development has taken place.  The result is six large shopping centers in Gainesville. The intersection of I-66 and I-29 (Lee Highway) has the largest shopping center with big box stores, such as Target Supercenter, Lowe’s, Best Buy, DSW, Walgreens, and many other stores and restaurants. Close to US-15 you can find Staples, Ross, Wegmans Food, Michael’s, and Harris Teeter.

The Promenade at Virginia Gateway was developed by The Peterson Companies and opened in January 2012.  The Regal Theaters which opened in late 2013.

A proposed Gainesville railway station for VRE is scheduled to open in 2022, connecting the region via commuter rail to Fairfax, Manassas, and Washington, D.C.
